Where They At NYC ("we", "us") is a community-powered app for checkpoint alerts in New York City. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
- Account info (name, email, profile photo if you upload one) so you can sign in.
- Location info (precise GPS coordinates if you grant permission, and a derived borough) to show nearby checkpoints and power location-based alerts.
- Checkpoint activity(reports you create, confirmations/dismissals) to keep the feed accurate.
- Photos you upload as photo evidence when reporting.
- Push notification token(a device token from Apple/Expo) so we can send alerts when you opt in (Premium).
- Subscription status (free vs Premium) to apply feature access and usage limits.
How we use information
- Provide core app features (reports, map, alerts).
- Personalize alerts based on your borough, radius, and selected checkpoint types.
- Send push notifications only if you enable them in settings (Premium).
- Prevent abuse, enforce limits (free vs Premium), and keep the community feed reliable.
Sharing
We don’t sell your personal data. We share limited information with service providers that help us run the app (for example: hosting, maps, storage, and push notifications). These providers are only allowed to use your data to provide their services.
Retention
Checkpoints and photo evidence are meant to be short-lived. Reports and uploaded photos expire and are automatically deleted (typically within ~8 hours). We may keep basic account and settings data until you request deletion.
Your choices
- Location: You can turn off location access in your phone settings. The app can still work, but nearby features won’t be as accurate.
- Notifications: You can turn push notifications on/off in the app (Premium) and in iOS settings.
- Quiet hours: If enabled, we won’t send push notifications during your quiet hours.
Purchases and subscriptions
Premium subscriptions are handled through Apple In‑App Purchases. We do not collect or store your full payment card details.
Children
This app is not intended for children under 13.
